TOURNAMENT RULES

Know the Rules. Play Hard. Have Fun.

Hoops for Hope is designed to keep the action moving and the focus on great basketball, family, and an even greater cause. Please review the tournament rules before taking the court.

Referees will review key rules with both teams before each game. All referee decisions regarding foul violations, and game play are final.

Player Eligibility

Father-Daughter Teams

Each team consists of one father and one daughter.

Daughter Age Requirement

Daughters must be entering high school or older to participate.

Game Format & Scoring

Tournament games use a modified continuous-play format inspired by Olympic 3v3 basketball.

Group Round

Games are played until one team reaches 16 points.

Group Round Final Four

Games are played until one team reaches 21 points.

Single Elimination Sweet 16

Games are played until one team reaches 25 points.

Teams must win by 2 points during the Sweet 16 Round.

Championship Game

The Championship Game is played until one team reaches 35 points.

How Points Are Scored

Scoring is adjusted for the 2v2 format:

Inside the 3-point line = 1 point

Beyond the 3-point line = 2 points

Traditional three-point field goals therefore count as 2 points, while traditional two-point field goals count as 1 point.

Starting the Game

A coin flip will determine which team receives the first possession.

From there, get ready to keep moving. Hoops for Hope uses continuous play, so there is no traditional check after every made basket or change of possession.

Continuous Play

Losers Out

Games are played losers out.

When the offensive team scores, the defensive team immediately becomes the offense.

The new offensive team should:

1. Take the ball directly out of the net.

2. Move the ball beyond the 3-point line.

3. Once the ball has been cleared beyond the 3-point line, it is live and the team may attack the basket.

Clear the Ball

The ball must be cleared beyond the 3-point line after every change of possession before the new offensive team can attempt to score.

No Check After a Basket

There is no check ball following a made basket or normal change of possession.

A check ball is used only when the ball goes out of bounds.

Keep It Moving

There is no delaying play following a made basket.

The scoring team may not intentionally prevent the opposing team from retrieving the ball and continuing play.

First Violation: Delay warning

Second Violation: One foul shot plus possession for the opposing team

Fouls

All fouls are determined by the referee.

Defensive Fouls

If a defensive foul occurs:

  • During the act of shooting: The offensive team retains possession.

  • Outside the act of shooting: The offensive team retains possession.

Intentional Fouls

If the referee determines that a foul  was committed intentionally, the offensive team will receive:

One foul shot + possession of the ball

Offensive Fouls

An obvious offensive foul results in an immediate change of possession.

No 3-Second or 5-Second Violations

There is no 3-second rule and no 5-second rule during tournament play.

Players can focus on movement, teamwork, and making the next play.

Officials Have the Final Call

Referees will determine all fouls, violations, and other game infractions.

Before each game, the referee will review tournament rules and expectations with both teams so everyone begins the game on the same page.

Respecting the Officials

No arguing with referees or tournament officials.

We're here to compete, but we're also here for a cause. Hoops for Hope is a charity tournament built around family, community, and supporting families affected by lung cancer.

Play hard. Compete with respect. And remember what we're playing for.
